A multicenter study assessed the impact of rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) on clinical outcomes among patients with gram-negative bloodstream infections. Conducted in Greece, India, Israel, and Spain, the FAST trial involved 899 participants, exploring the primary endpoint of desirability of outcome ranking at 30 days. While rapid AST was not superior in mortality outcomes compared to standard methods, it facilitated quicker antibiotic adjustments and earlier effective therapy, especially in resistant infections, highlighting significant process-of-care improvements.
