Direct comparison of efficacy of combining ivermectin versus five first-line chemotherapy drugs with recombinant methioninase against colon-cancer cells
To compare the efficacy of recombinant methioninase (rMETase) combined with ivermectin versus rMETase combined with five first-line chemotherapeutic agents on HCT116 human colon-cancer cells.
Key Findings:
Ivermectin combined with rMETase (CI, 6.7 ± 1.9) was more effective than rMETase combined with 5-fluorouracil (CI, 2.0 ± 0.7), cisplatinum (CI, 2.4 ± 1.5), gemcitabine (CI, 2.5 ± 0.7), and paclitaxel (CI, 2.8 ± 0.5).
Doxorubicin combined with rMETase (CI, 7.8 ± 1.7) was slightly more effective than the combination of ivermectin and rMETase.
Interpretation:
The results indicate that ivermectin, when combined with rMETase, demonstrates superior efficacy against colon-cancer cells compared to four out of five standard chemotherapy agents.
Limitations:
The study was conducted in vitro and may not fully represent in vivo conditions.
Only one cancer cell line (HCT116) was used for the analysis.
Conclusion:
Ivermectin shows promise as an anticancer agent when combined with rMETase, outperforming several standard chemotherapy drugs in this study.
