Objective:

To assess hand hygiene infrastructure and point-of-care (POC) resource availability in wards across public hospitals in Sierra Leone.

Approach:
  • Design and setting: Nationwide multicentre cross-sectional survey of operational inpatient and clinical wards in 19 eligible secondary and tertiary public hospitals in Sierra Leone.
  • Data collection: Data were collected in February and March 2025 by trained national IPC assessors using the WHO-WIS tool. Assessors interviewed ward in-charges and hospital IPC personnel and directly inspected and counted hand hygiene facilities and supplies.
  • Measures: The assessment covered ward-level hand hygiene facilities, resource management, administrative support, audits, and training, as well as the availability and functionality of point-of-care infrastructure and supplies, including sinks, alcohol-based handrub, soap, and towels.
