Objective:

To assess the independent association between parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and atrial fibrillation (AF) in a cohort of patients referred for coronary angiography.

Approach:
  • Study Design: Analysis of data from 3,201 patients enrolled in the LURIC study, using multivariable binary logistic regression to evaluate the association between PTH and AF.
Key Findings:
  • AF was present in 12.2% of patients.
  • In the primary multivariable model, PTH was significantly associated with AF (OR 3.96 (2.32–6.76), p < 0.001).
  • The association remained significant in the fully adjusted model (OR 2.32 (1.24–4.35), p = 0.009).
  • The association persisted after adjustment for markers of cardiac dysfunction.
Interpretation:

Elevated PTH levels are associated with prevalent AF.

Limitations:
  • The study is observational and cannot establish causality.
  • Potential confounding factors related to mineral metabolism and medication were considered, but residual confounding may exist.
Conclusion:

Elevated PTH is associated with AF in patients referred for coronary angiography.
