A national cohort study analyzing birth and mortality data from 2018 to 2023 reveals differing trends in pregnancy-associated mortality rates between states with abortion bans and those without. While overall mortality rates declined by 9.8% in nonban states, the decline was only 2.4% in ban states, with Texas showing a 3.3% decrease. Notably, increases in mortality were observed among non-Hispanic Asian and Black populations in some ban states. Limitations include the short observational window after bans and potential misclassifications in data. The study emphasizes the need for careful interpretation of early findings regarding the impact of abortion laws on maternal health.
