Objective:

To investigate the interplay between genetic and lifestyle obesity-related risk factors in UAE citizens and expatriates with high incidence of obesity-related diabetes.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • 31 out of 545 subjects developed diabetes during the follow-up period, representing 6% of the sample.
    • Local UAE citizens reported significantly lower levels of physical activity compared to non-local expatriates.
    • Obesity, being a UAE national, and physical inactivity were associated with increased diabetes risk after adjusting for other prognostic indicators.
    Interpretation:

Physical inactivity was identified as a significant risk factor for developing diabetes in the studied population.

    Limitations:
    • The study's sample size may limit the generalizability of the findings to the broader population.
    • The focus on specific community health center attendees may not represent the entire UAE population.
    Conclusion:

Further research is required to understand the reasons for the variability in diabetes risk among UAE citizens.
