SEGWAY was a prospective, single-arm phase II trial designed to assess rapid-resorbable gelatin microspheres for protecting non-tumorous liver during Y-90 radioembolization.

  • 2

Rapid-resorbable gelatin microspheres are physically crosslinked porcine gelatin particles intended to dissolve by approximately 70% within 24 hours and resorb completely within 3 days.

  • 3

The trial enrolled 20 patients with liver cancer and required Child–Pugh class A status and non-tumorous liver volume of at least 50% of the Y-90-perfused liver volume.

  • 4

Operators selected the microsphere type, prescribed tumor absorbed dose, and hepatic arteries for flow modulation; the protocol specified no target tumor or non-tumorous liver dose.

  • 5

The study rationale was to temporarily modulate arterial flow during Y-90 delivery while avoiding the prolonged effects associated with conventional embolic particles.
