Undeclared pharmacologically active ingredients were detected in 6 of 18 targeted over-the-counter skin products, and all 3 tested units of each positive product contained an ingredient.

  • 2

Clobetasol propionate, a prescription-only superpotent corticosteroid, was detected in all 6 positive products at concentrations of approximately 0.01% to 0.46%.

  • 3

Two clobetasol-containing products also contained the antifungals miconazole or terbinafine, and product labels disclosed none of these active ingredients.

  • 4

Positive products had more than 10,000 combined online reviews, and 3 skin-lightening products contained clobetasol despite potential facial and periocular exposure.

Because products were selected for higher likelihood of containing undeclared ingredients, the 33.3% detection rate does not estimate prevalence across the US market.
