The day-7 landmark analysis included 195 mixed-ICU patients with available mHLA-DR and plasma PCR results for EBV, CMV, HHV-6, and HSV-1.

Immunosuppression was defined as mHLA-DR below 8000 AB/C, and viral reactivation as DNAemia for at least 1 herpesvirus at day 7.

  • 3

At day 7, 33% of patients had at least 1 herpesvirus reactivation, and 25% of those patients had multiple reactivations.

  • 4

Low mHLA-DR was associated with adverse outcomes, whereas viral reactivation was not; outcomes did not differ significantly by reactivation status among immunosuppressed patients.

  • 5

The study found no evidence that concurrent immunosuppression and blood herpesvirus reactivation defined a particularly severe endotype in this mixed ICU population.
