In the ESSENCE Japanese subgroup, 116 participants were randomized: 78 to semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly and 38 to placebo.

  • 2

Despite lower mean BMI and older age than the overall trial population, Japanese participants had similar MASH resolution rates with semaglutide: 63.1% vs 36.8% with placebo.

  • 3

Semaglutide numerically favored MASH resolution across BMI categories, including BMI <27 kg/m², and improved liver enzymes and noninvasive assessments.

  • 4

Fibrosis improvement without worsening steatohepatitis occurred in 36.5% of Japanese semaglutide recipients, but the treatment difference was imprecise amid a high placebo response and small sample.

The subgroup analysis was limited by small numbers; efficacy in patients with BMI <25 kg/m² and effects on liver-related events require further study.
