Management of mpox using tecovirimat through expanded access in the Central African Republic

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease whose epidemiology has evolved with the emergence of subclades characterized by human-to-human transmission and broader geographic spread.

Tecovirimat was made available through an Expanded Access Programme in the Central African Republic from 2021 to 2023.

The EAP primarily aimed to provide tecovirimat to patients with suspected mpox and secondarily to describe clinical and virological features and assess treatment safety.

Eligible consenting patients weighed more than 13 kg and had suspected mpox awaiting laboratory confirmation or PCR-confirmed mpox; treatment was provided at Mbaiki District Hospital and Bangui General Hospital.

Participants received oral tecovirimat for 14 days under a standardized protocol, with clinical monitoring and virological sampling during treatment and follow-up.
