More than 25 HIV residency pathways have been established nationwide, but most programs and graduates are outside regions with the greatest need, including the Southern United States.

A 1-year HRSA-funded initiative in 2023-2024 selected six family medicine and internal medicine programs to establish or expand HIV residency pathways, awarding each $68,000.

The initiative paired seed funding with faculty mentorship, monthly meetings, a community of practice, and a toolkit covering pathway design, assessment, and sustainability.

The six participating programs recruited 24 residents: 6 in family medicine and 18 in internal medicine; none had graduated when the report was written.

The consortium held 21 mentoring sessions with funded-site directors, averaging 3.5 individualized meetings per pathway, and quarterly meetings with funded sites.
