Rapid molecular diagnostic testing (RMDT) for vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) bacteremia was implemented in October 2014.

  • 2

RMDT significantly reduced the median time to active antimicrobial therapy from 32 hours to 21 hours in patients with VRE bacteremia.

  • 3

There was no significant difference in 30-day mortality rates between patients who underwent RMDT and those who did not.

  • 4

A subgroup analysis excluding leukemia patients showed RMDT was associated with decreased 30-day mortality, but this finding did not persist in multivariate analysis.

  • 5

Overall, RMDT improved the speed of treatment initiation for VRE bacteremia but did not demonstrate a clear improvement in clinical outcomes.
