    Melioidosis is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a bacterium found in soil and water. The disease is endemic in parts of Southeast Asia.

    The study measured B. pseudomallei antibody seroprevalence among international travelers to Southeast Asia and examined factors associated with seropositivity.

    Participants were 370 adults from nonendemic regions who had spent at least one month traveling through Southeast Asia.

    Researchers used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to detect IgG antibodies against two B. pseudomallei antigens: Hcp1 and O-polysaccharide.

    Using separate thresholds for probable melioidosis and probable environmental exposure, the study classified 49 of 370 travelers (13.2%) as seropositive. These antibody results did not confirm clinical disease.
