The study assessed influenza vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization among children aged 6–72 months across four seasons in Foggia, southern Italy.

  • 2

Among 935 hospitalized children tested for influenza, 207 were influenza-positive cases and 728 were influenza-negative controls.

  • 3

Pooled adjusted vaccine effectiveness against influenza-associated hospitalization was 62.5% for at least 1 vaccine dose and 61.9% for full vaccination.

  • 4

Adjusted effectiveness was higher for LAIV than IIV: 80.3% versus 50.9% after at least 1 dose.

  • 5

Subtype-specific effectiveness was 82.3% against A(H1N1)pdm09 and 43.5% against A(H3N2); the latter estimate was not statistically significant.
