    Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) is a severe hemorrhagic fever caused by Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), first identified during Uganda’s 2007–2008 outbreak.

    As of June 6, 2026, the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had resulted in 515 laboratory-confirmed cases and 91 confirmed deaths, although these figures remained subject to change.

    BDBV spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of symptomatic or deceased individuals, including within households, healthcare settings, and during burial activities.

    No human cases of presymptomatic BDBV transmission have been documented, although animal-model evidence supports its biological plausibility.

    No BDBV-specific evidence is available on post-recovery viral persistence or transmission from survivors; current recommendations rely largely on evidence involving Zaire ebolavirus.
